Engineered timber flooring comes in all shapes and sizes as well as different locking systems. The type of locking system a floor has will impact the type of install required as well as whether it is appropriate for DIY install.
5G Locking System
Traditionally timber flooring has used a Tongue & Groove (T&G) joining profile, the introduction of the G5 locking system however has meant these boards are easy to install and provide additional stability between floorboards.
Embelton Flooring’s 14mm European Oak and Australian Timber Species, all feature a DIY-friendly 5G Locking System. This interlocking system makes for easy installation and is suitable for both direct stick and floating installation. When it comes to the unfortunate situation of damaged boards, if the floor is floated with a 5G locking system you have the ability pull up boards from the closest wall without damaging the locking system. With a T&G system however, the locking system must be cut due to the glue in the joins.
Tongue & Groove Joining Profile
Embelton Flooring’s European Oak Wideboard, Herringbone and Rustic Oak ranges features a T&G joining profile, and is only recommended for professional installation. Additionally, boards may need to be strapped and glue applied between the joins of individual planks if floated. This profile is designed for glue down installation however, which we recommend for all engineered timber flooring, as it results in a sturdier board, with superior acoustics.Â
