Among the many advantages of engineered timber flooring over solid timber, such as cost, durable factory pre-finish, and ease of installation, is the flexibility to choose the thickness and width of your chosen boards.
Engineered timber is remarkably tolerant to rapid weather changes. Less likely to expand and contract, the individual boards can therefore be manufactured in larger widths, for an impactful designer look that creates a visual sense of spaciousness.
Why Does Size Matter?
As a general rule, the thicker the boards, the greater the cost. A thicker board will offer greater stability and overall durability and can be sanded back and refinished several times over its lifetime.
Embelton Flooring have engineered products available in a selection of timber veneers, or face layers. Ranging from 0.6 to 4mm, there’s an appropriate flooring solution for every home, lifestyle and budget.
Layered on top of a multi-level wood core, the 3mm timber veneer of our 14mm thick engineered timber can be re-sanded and coated approximately twice, with each sanding removing 1mm. This is the same for our striking Herringbone boards, while at 15mm, wideboard timber floorboards feature a hardy 4mm surface veneer that can be re-sanded approximately three times.
12mm boards provide a more affordable engineered timber option, but at 1.5mm, re-buffing the solid timber veneer is not recommended. Similarly, Hybrid flooring with its stone polymer composite core, is exceptionally hardwearing, but cannot be sanded back. Both European Oak Hybrid and Australian Timber Hybrid products are 7.5mm thick and come with 1.2mm and 0.6mm veneers respectively.
Smooth or matte, wideboard or traditional, thicker timber veneer feels more solid underfoot and permits greater re-surfacing potential, which is very helpful for rooms with particularly high foot traffic such as family rooms and play areas.
